Camilla Belle will star as the title role in Mary, Mother of Christ for MGM. The film is set to be released in Spring 2010. Belle will be joined by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who will tackle the dual roles of Gabriel and Lucifer. The legendary Peter O'Toole has been cast as Symeon, a man who meets Mary shortly after Christ's birth.
Alejandro Agresti, who last directed the romantic drama The Lake House, is attached to direct the film. The producers are hoping that Al Pacino will come aboard as Herod, and that Jessica Lange will agree to play Anna the Prophetess.
Aloe Entertainment will produce the film, which will focus on aspects of Mary's life that have never been portrayed in a film before. It will examine her youth, her loves, and her life as a new mother in a story with themes of female empowerment.
